LIQUOR
Cap Tikus and Wangae are traditional distilled alcoholic beverages that originate
from the Minahasa region in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, and are made from the
naturally fermented sap of palm trees, particularly the aren palm (Arenga
pinnata), which grows abundantly in the area. The process of making these
beverages has been passed down through generations, involving time-honored
techniques of collecting the palm sap, fermenting it naturally, and then distilling it
to produce a strong alcoholic drink. The production and consumption of Cap Tikus
and Wangae are deeply rooted in the cultural and social life of the Minahasa
people, where these drinks are not only consumed during social gatherings but
also play an important role in traditional ceremonies and rituals. As early as the
18th century, historical records and oral traditions indicate that Cap Tikus had
already become an integral element of daily life in Minahasa society, valued not
only for its potency and unique taste but also for its cultural symbolism and its
role in strengthening community bonds and expressing local identity.
